Fall into Action!
The fall and winter season is Vata time in Ayurveda.Vata is air and space: dry, light, cold, rough, subtle, mobile and clear. Vata governs all movement, natural urges, communication, all elimination and relays sensory input. It is the most important of the 3 doshas and if left unbalanced it causes pitta and kapha to become unbalanced.Nature has her way of adapting to the seasonal changes. We also change with the season. Now we are prone to dry skin and tissues, colds, flu, and allergies. If we do not clear the excess heat (pitta) from our bodies, then our immune systems are weakened. Notice how the trees radiate with fiery reds oranges and yellows then fall off, birds migrate, squirrels gather nuts – all are supporting their own survival in harmony with the seasonal cycles. Our own survival depends on staying connected with these cycles and we do this through eating seasonally and locally, cleansing regularly and aligning with nature.Seasonal cleansing can help restore the body’s intelligence, regulate digestive fire (agni) and aid in the removal of toxins so we can rebuild and strengthen our immunity. With all the viruses and flu, we need to take the immunity challenge and fight back! We can tackle these cold months ahead by eating a vata pacifying diet – foods that are warm, heavy, moist and oily and have tastes of sweet, sour and salty. We want to reduce intake of cold, dry and light foods and those that are very spicy, bitter and astringent. We need routine that we can stick to: regular exercise, yoga, meditation and pranayama; daily self massage with warming sesame oil and getting sufficient rest.Take action and prepare for the colder months by scheduling a private individualized cleanse or just a rebalancing oil treatment to strengthen your immunity!
